The eyes are one of the most important organs in the human body. They are responsible for vision, which is essential for our complex daily activities such as reading, writing, and driving. The eyes are also important for communication and facial expressions.

The eyes, though a highly complex and evolved organ, specially enclosed in bony sockets orbital sockets, are susceptible to a number of problems, such as infections, injuries, and diseases. It is important therefore to take care of your eyes and to see an eye doctor regularly to ensure that they are healthy.

There are many natural remedies that can help keep your eyes and vision healthy and free from strain, disease or infections. Here are a few of the most effective ones:

  • Eat a healthy diet: Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is good for your overall health, and it can also help keep your eyes healthy. Be sure to eat plenty of dark leafy greens, which are especially good for your eyesight. Fruits, vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids are packed with nutrients that are essential for eye health, including vitamin A, vitamin C, and lutein.
  • Exercise regularly: Exercise is not only good for your overall health, but it can also help improve your vision. Exercise increases blood circulation to the entire body including the eyes and helps to reduce eye strain.
  • Exercising your eyes: Eye exercises can improve blood circulation to the eyes and strengthen the eye muscles.
  • Massaging your eyes: Massaging the temples and around the eyes can help to relieve stress and tension, and improve blood circulation to the eyes.
  • Using a warm compress: Applying a warm compress to the eyes can help to relieve stress and tension, and improve blood circulation to the eyes.
  • Taking breaks: Resting your eyes regularly throughout the day is important for eye health. It is recommended to take at least 15-minute break every two hours of screen work.
  • Wear sunglasses: sunglasses protect your eyes from harmful UV rays which have been linked to various eye diseases and degenerative conditions of the eyes.
  • Quit smoking: Smoking causes changes in the eyes that can lead to vision loss. Smokers are twice as likely to develop AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration) compared with people who do not smoke. You are two to three times more likely to develop cataracts compared with people who do not smoke.
  • Get enough sleep: Sleep is important for overall health, and it is also critical for eye health. When you don’t get enough sleep, your eyes can become strained and dry. Make sure to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night.
  • Wear UV protective glasses: Ultraviolet (UV) light can damage your eyes and lead to conditions such corneal damage, cataracts and macular degeneration. These are chronic effects resulting from UV exposure and can ultimately lead to decreased vision and blindness.
  • Schedule regular eye checks: Don’t wait till your vision deteriorates beyond recovery. Visit your eye doctor for a regular exam. The majority of blinding eye diseases and injuries if detected early, are reversible!

Taking care of your eyes and vision is your personal responsibility. These tips discussed here are not substitutes for medical interventions by a certified specialist. Consult your doctor if you have concerns regarding your eyes and vision.
